Intimacy Directors International Workshops

True North Theatre, in partnership with the University of Maine, presents a weekend of workshops with Intimacy Directors International.

March 30, 2019

Intimacy for the Stage for Actors and Performers
12-3 PM
$50

We will examine IDI’s Five Pillars of Intimacy Standards and Protocol by applying them to safe and repeatable exercises. While some small moments of contact will be explored (a hug, a handshake, a touch) nothing is required. As a performer, you will be provided with tools to find chemistry quickly and safely, practice consent, learn about how to approach choreography as a performer, and find closure after performing intimate work.

Intimacy for Directors and Choreographers
4-7 PM
$50

In the past, coercion and fear of authority were formerly methods of choreographing scenes of intimacy and sexual choreography in the performing arts. Using Intimacy Directors Internationals five pillars of safe intimacy direction as a foundation, we will explore a safer process for enthusiastically consensual intimacy choreography that keeps the entire company in constant collaborative communication, helping to prevent harassment and abuse in rehearsals, backstage, and during performances.

Cost:
Each workshop is $50, or $40 each for both
Discounts available for University of Maine students, and for theatre companies bringing 4 or more people.
Each workshop has a maximum of 20 people.  If there is interest, additional workshops may be added on Sunday, March 31.

Intimacy Direction is a comprehensive approach to the creation of moments of intimacy on stage or screen. The consent based work method protects and respects actors. The context focused approach allows directors to communicate their vision and actors to realize it in a confident, creative and safe way. The unique method of choreography allows specific and repeatable visual storytelling as well as holding the integrity of the intimacy throughout the rehearsal and performance process. With the introduction of specific protocols and methods it supports and  protects the whole creative team – directors, actors and stage management – as well as teachers, producers and company management. From easing discomfort to preventing sexual harassment, Intimacy Direction allows the whole team to create authentic and powerful stories of intimacy in a safe, respectful and consensual way.

Intimacy Directors International has been featured on NPR, The New York Times, the Huffington Post, and hbo.com.
